Cummins Onan manufactures the RV Quiet line with gasoline, propane, and diesel models. Gasoline and diesel fuel are drawn from the vehicle's primary fuel supply. Some recreational vehicles use a secondary source fuel such as propane tanks to power a generator. This is usually the case when depleting the main fuel tank is not an option, or in trailered RV applications. Generator capacity depends on the size of the vehicle or trailer and the number of air conditioners and the appliances in use.
The Quiet Gasoline series includes models that operates on either propane (LP) or on gasoline, but not both. Gasoline models range in capacity from 2.8 to 7.0 (2800 to 7000) kilowatts. Propane units supply 2.5 to 6.5 kilowatts. Quiet Diesel supplies more power in the range of 6.0 to 12.5 kilowatts for larger recreational vehicles such as luxury diesel pushers and similar vehicles.
Larger vehicles may have two or three air conditioners and require more power, while small towable camper trailers require a smaller capacity generator. Adding the amount of power used by each appliance and light will help determine how much power to purchase. Most appliances list their wattage or amp requirements on a permanently affixed tag or stamp, others put the information in the handbook.
To determine the amount power required, add up the wattage or calculate the requirement for each appliance using the formula volts x amps. A coffee pot that runs on 120 volts and draws 5 amps uses 120 volts x 5 amps = 600 watts. Each appliance draws power specific to its purpose. Always keep in mind that appliances with motors have a startup current that is three to six times higher than the running current. If too many start at once and there is not enough power, the breaker will trip.
A 2.8-kilowatt generator will start and run a single 13,500 BTU rooftop air conditioner and still have 600 watts remaining for appliances and lighting, with 300 watts leftover to allow for additional power.
Cummins Onan RV generators meet or exceed National Park Service requirements for noise in parks and campgrounds. At a remote campsite, you'll have plenty of power and won't disturb the peace and quiet you went looking for in the first place.
