Solid Genset
I purchased this unit in September 2019 from Norwall. They had the best price and got it delivered to me quickly. I have a 2117 sq ft new construction home with a 3.5 ton A/C unit so the smaller 13kw model worked out perfectly. I wanted to go as small as possible as I am limited to 2 120 pound propane tanks where I am located. The smaller unit has no problem running my entire home with the assistance of 2 load shed modules controlling my oven, hot tub, dryer and water heater. During our test we ran the entire home for 8 hours off the unit and the load was typically under 15% with the AC off. My concern was making sure we would have sufficient run time during FL hurricane season (Located in Tampa) off our limited fuel supply. It is unlikely we would be making heavy use of our oven or electric clothes dryer during an outage so the load shed modules enabled me to keep everything in my main panel without need for any sub panels. This also kept the inspector happy since we wouldn't be able to overload the unit. I assisted with the installation and I can tell you almost every part of this system feels extremely solid. The ATS weighs a TON! Everything is in solid metal boxes and feels more akin to commercial products than something residential. My only real complaint is that the ATS is very aggressive when the power fails. It calls for the genset to start instantly upon power loss. Most sets will wait a few seconds to see if it is just a brief outage. Once the unit starts it locks into a sequence that has it assume the load and run for about 5-8 minutes after utility power resumes. It's not a big deal and may be adjustable if you are willing to dig deeper into the system config. All in all this feels like a quality unit from Cummins that isn't as easy to set up as a comparable Generac, but from the build quality and legendary Cummins support I feel it will be a reliable investment for years to come.
