Quick Guide to Portable Generators

Portable RV Generators

Most RVs plug into a TT-30R receptacle. Less than 60 dBA noise is a must for campgrounds and parks. Remote start for rainy mornings. Choose enough power for A/C and other appliances. 3000 running watts is probably the minimum.

Portable Camping and Tailgating Generators

Less power and high fuel efficiency—1600 to 3000 running watts with one or two household outlets covers most needs. Less than 60 dBA noise.

Portable Home Generators

Usually performs the dual purpose of supplying emergency power in an outage and provides portable power that goes wherever you need it. Keep refrigerators, sump pumps, a few lights, and other essentials running during an outage. A manual transfer switch lets you power the furnace or even a central air conditioner if the generator has enough power. Bring power to a remote cabin or campsite away from utility power.

Portable Jobsite Generators

Reliability and long run times. Remote start is a good option. Automatic low idle mode for periods of low power use. Plenty of outlets and OSHA approved panel and grounding. 120/240-volt operation helps balance loads and keep everyone’s tools running. Gasoline is most popular, but diesel has a reputation for reliability.

Electric power wherever you need it from small, efficient generators to models that easily power an entire home or a building crew on a job site. Portable Generators offer versatility and convenience.

Portable Generators - FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

A. All engines require maintenance. At a minimum, check the portable generator oil level before starting and at least once every day. Add the recommended oil as necessary, but do not overfill. Your owner manual has a maintenance schedule. Shut the generator down and perform maintenance on time according to the schedule. Fuel tank size limits running time on gasoline and propane while natural gas provides a nearly limitless supply of fuel—shut down at least once per day to check the oil or perform regular maintenance.
A. Two methods provide a safe portable generator to house connection. A generator cord connect the generator to an inlet box, which connects to a manual transfer switch. The transfer switch allows the generator to power only the circuits within the transfer switch. Another method uses and interlock, which only allows generator power to flow through the main circuit breaker panel if the main circuit breaker is in the OFF position. A transfer switch helps prevent overloads, while the interlock relies on the operator to shut off all the circuit breakers not currently in use.
A. Portable generator prices start at just over $300. As generator capacity increases, so does the price because they require bigger engines and higher capacity alternators. Traditional portables cost less than inverters.
A. Buy a portable generator that fits your purpose and size requirements. A good place to start is by the various portable generator categories at Norwall. Use the 3-bar menu on Mobile or the drop-down menu on a PC to select a category that fits your purpose, like home backup, RV, Camping, or jobsite. Filter by brand, fuel, watts, voltage or fuel.
